A man named brother Toney starts to pastor the church, but all forms of snake handling die out. The Church of Jesus with Signs starts to collapse. When he was a young reporter he traveled to El Salvador during times of war, where he had several near death experiences. The dangers of snake handling feed into his love for danger. He feels a spark when he is around them that he hasn't felt in church since he was a child. Dennis has grown almost obsessed with the snake handlers.
Chapter 3 Summary (Sheep Without a Shepherd) The church is split between supporters for Glenn and Supporters for Darlenne. Covington recognizes that his own fixation on the snake handlers began at the trial, with his desire to understand their lifestyle and motivations. Both attorneys seem to want to distance themselves from the Summerfords, with Glenn's own attorney calling them a "dysfunctional family" (42), despite the fact that Darlene has gotten a job and moved into her own home while maintaining a safe pregnancy at the time of the trial. The prosecution argues that Glenn had been under the influence of alcohol and that he tried to kill Darlene in a fit of jealousy, while the defense argues that both had been drinking and Darlene had chosen to put her hand in the box of rattlesnakes. In the court house, Covington points out that the hill people from Scottsboro stand out in their appearance amongst the crowd for their rangy, impoverished manner. He goes into great detail about the trial of Glenn Summerford, choosing to focus on Darlene Summerford eyewitness testimony from the night he allegedly attempted to kill her. Chapter 2 Summary (The Trial) Covington's interest in the Summerfords' case stems from a piece he is writing for The New York Times. Dennis attends several services and meets Brother Carl Porter a man with whom he foreshadows future conflicts. Dennis is intrigued greatly by the peculiarities of the church and is almost drawn to it.
After doing several interviews with members of the church, Dennis is invited to a service. This preacher's name is Glenn Summerford, he is the preacher of the Church of Jesus With Signs. He stumbles onto the case of a snake-handling preacher's attempted murder trial. Chapter 1 Summary (Following Signs) Dennis Covington is a writer in search of an intriguing eye-catching story. Tries to take Elvis Presley Saylors wife. He is being outcast by the church because of conflicts between him and Punkin Brown.
